Green University of Bangladesh celebrates Shakespeare Day

The English Club of Green University of Bangladesh (GUB), in collaboration with their Department of English, celebrated Shakespeare Day 2021 through a webinar today (April 24).
Shakespeare scholar, translator, and poet, Mostafa Tofayel Hossain, delivered the keynote speech at the programme. A number of students presented scholarly papers, alongside faculty members.
The programme was chaired by K M Wazed Kabir, Chairperson, Department of English, GUB. Prof Abdur Razzaque, Pro Vice Chancellor, GUB, was present as the chief guest. Members of the university's English Club also staged some scenes from well-known plays of Shakespeare.
From 2016 to 2018, GUB's English Club staged full-length versions of five popular Shakespeare plays, such as "The Merchant of Venice" (thrice), "Hamlet", "Othello" (twice), "Romeo and Juliet" and "Macbeth". They also performed "Othello" at British Council and the GUB auditorium. The club's next project is "Julius Caesar". Their activities are currently halted due to the pandemic. They also staged Wole Soyinka's "The Lion and the Jewel" at Dhaka University.
