DUTS celebrates World Tourism Day
Recently, Dhaka University Tourist Society (DUTS) organised a photography contest and exhibition, marking world tourism day. Every year, the organisation, in association with Bangladesh Tourism Board, celebrates this occasion. The event was held at TSC, University of Dhaka. DUTS became the first organisation to celebrate World Tourism Day in Bangladesh in 1997.
The celebrations began with a cultural rally near Shahbagh, in which participants dressed up as 30 different characters, each representing a different ethnicity, religion, folklore and mythology.
The event also included a quiz competition, a bioscope show and film screenings.
The photography contest was open for all. Contestants were instructed to capture moments that signify travelling, tourism and representation of different cultures, using their professional or mobile phone cameras. The photographs for the exhibition were selected by the judges beforehand. Once the exhibition began, votes from the visitors determined the winners of the contest.
"We hope to create a tourist friendly environment in Bangladesh. In order to do that, we are working with the Bangladesh Tourism Board. We arrange seminars, workshops and clean-up programmes, among other things," said Mahmudul Hasan Nishat, President, DUTS.
