Started in 2012, the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) is an international mathematical competition. The participants are asked to solve 6 mathematical problems, for a maximum score of 7 points each, and a maximum total value of 42 points. Regarded as the largest mathematical competition for girls, the event witnessed the participation of 213 girls from 55 countries this year. The test was conducted on two consecutive days, and the participants solved 3 problems on each day.
For the first time, team Bangladesh, consisting of Nujhat Ahmed Disha, from Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, Rayan Bintay Mostafa, from Natore Government Girls' High School, Arifa Alam, from Tikatuli Kamrunnesa Government Girls' High School, Dhaka and Safa Tasnim, from Government PN Girls' High School, Rajshahi, participated in this Olympiad. The team bagged one silver and one bronze medal, won by Disha and Rayan, respectively.
The team was selected on the basis of two preliminary tests and the performances of the students in last year's Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad, Asian Pacific Mathematical Olympiad and the National Math Camp. The selected students were then trained for a month, through an online camp. "The camp was a brilliant learning process for the four of us. Our mentors and team leader, Ipshita Bonhi, were really helpful and are the biggest contributors behind our success," shared Disha.
The Olympiad was conducted online, and the participants were invigilated, by their mentors, through a Zoom meeting. Online events greatly restrict the chances of interacting with other participants. "I found it difficult to concentrate on the first day, as I was sitting for the exam from my home. It was difficult to stimulate the exam-centre feeling at home," she further said.
The closing ceremony featured a video posted on the EGMO 2021 home page, in which the organisers announced the results. "Though it was not an event, our team leader and mentors made it feel like a virtual ceremony as we watched the video together, through an online meeting, and shared our feelings," added Rayan.
EGMO 2022 is scheduled to be held in Hungary.
