‘The best performance ever’
Bangladesh coach Jamie Day expressed pride over his charges even though they went down 2-0 to Qatar in a 2022 World Cup Qualifier match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday.
“I’m extremely proud with the performance and the attitude the boys showed tonight. It was a fantastic work rate. I think we got better chances in the second half and caused Qatar problems. It showed how far we have come to give Asian Cup winners a game. Disappointing to concede at the end but I can’t praise the boys enough for the way they played today,” Day said after the match.
“It was their best-ever performance since I came in charge. The two teams were close for 90 minutes, regardless of the result this is the best performance the boys have shown. Six U-23 players started tonight so it showed we have good young players coming through. Obviously we have to keep that going to next game.
“I expected it would be a tough game but I believe the players performed beyond what I expected. It showed what they are capable of doing. We have good chances and it would be nice to get goals. We played fantastic tonight and want to repeat that against India,” continued Bangladesh’s English coach.
However, Bangladesh captain Jamal Bhuiyan was disappointed that they missed some good scoring opportunities.
“I’m extremely disappointed because we played a very good match. We had the chances but they made some goalline saves. It was Bangladesh that created more chances than Qatar. We worked hard, played better but conceded two bad goals but that’s football,” he said.
On the other hand, Jamie’s counterpart Felix Sunchez was happy about getting three points.
“We are not used to playing on this kind of wet field. But the players managed to win the game and our main target was to win. I’m happy to return with the full three points and no injuries so far,” said Sunchez.
