Kader gives up Sk Jamal presidency

Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club president Manzur Kader yesterday quit from his position, citing personal reasons. The veteran sports organiser, who turned the football team of the Dhanmondi club into a highly successful unit after taking the reins in 2010, reportedly sent his resignation letter to the club's chief patron Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, confirmed club football committee chairman Ashrafuddin Ahmed Chunnu last night.

Chunnu said that the veteran organiser has cited health issues for his decision of stepping down from the president's post.

Kader, however, could not be reached for a comment on the issue, despite repeated attempts.

Kader's resignation comes after a bitter wrangling between the club and the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) over the last couple of months over the desire by some of its national team players to leave the club. With AFC Cup starting in February, where Sheikh Jamal are scheduled to participate, the club tried desperately to hang on to most of its national players from the last season, but those players are reportedly interested in joining other clubs.

The BFF high-ups, meanwhile, had hinted on Friday that it could only negotiate with Sheikh Jamal DC if it wants to take those players on loan from other clubs if the players leave.

Known for his success with clubs like Abahani, Muktijoddha and Sheikh Jamal, Kader is a member of the BFF and a director of the Bangladesh Cricket Board.
