Will cricket in Bangladesh resume with DPL?
There were whispers among the cricketers whether the cricket in Bangladesh will resume with the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) as things look uncertain due to international commitments of the Tigers.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is planning to send the High Performance squad and the national team to Sri Lanka in September-October, the same time when cricketers are expected to return to playing the DPL which was halted in mid-March after the first round due to the coronavirus outbreak.
The majority of local players demanded to restart the league as the DPL is their main source of income but the cloud of uncertainty is still looming large over the future of the prestigious 50-over club competition with the coronavirus situation in the country yet to reach a better position.
Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM) officials earlier said that they are planning to resume DPL as soon as possible but they now, reverting from their previous stance, said that it is very unlikely as clubs will not be willing to take part without 40 leading cricketers of the country.
After the announcement of playing DPL in a controlled environment by the CCDM, previously there were speculations that clubs were asked to send a 15-member squad to CCDM as they were planning to host the tournament at BKSP and Cox's Bazar, splitting teams into two groups.
CCDM member secretary Ali Hossain however refused to accept it directly.
''We haven't sent any letter to the clubs nor did we ask them anything verbally. We are not sure when we can start the tournament. We will hold a meeting after Eid to take a decision about DPL,'' said Hossain adding that he doesn't feel that clubs will be ready to play the tournament without their key players. "The HP and the national team may go to Sri Lanka and if that is the case it will be very difficult [to resume league without key cricketers],'' he said.
