Tamim, Shakib guide Tigers to series victory
Bangladesh ODI skipper Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan shone as Bangladesh defeated West Indies convincingly by seven wickets in the second ODI to clinch the three-match ODI series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur today.
Shakib remained unbeaten on a 50-ball 43 while Tamim scored a 76-ball 50 to help Bangladesh chase a meagre 149-run target set by West Indies.
Shakib had marked his return to international cricket after serving a year-long ban imposed by the ICC in 2019 for not reporting corrupt approaches with an astounding bowling display -- returning figures of four for eight in 7.2 overs and also scooping the player-of-the-match award for his effort -- in the first ODI on Wednesday. But the 33-year-old, who had played a number of domestic games before being reinstated in the international arena, had been struggling to get runs since his return.
Bangladesh cricket fans have been waiting for Shakib to get back to groove with the willow and his unbeaten knock today is sure to give everyone concerned with the Bangladesh cricket a sigh of relief. Shakib looked very comfortable out in the middle today as he smashed four boundaries during his unbeaten knock and helped Tigers cross the line with ease.
The premier all-rounder today also achieved the feat of being the first player to have scored above 2500 runs and to have picked up 100 wickets in a single venue -- at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. Playing in his 82nd match in Mirpur, Shakib reached the milestone when he struck West Indies medium-pacer Raymon Reifer for a boundary towards the backward point in the 22nd over. Shakib had already scalped a total of 119 wickets in Mirpur and is just second to Wasim Akram who leads the chart for most wickets in a single venue with 122 wickets in 77 matches at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
Before Shakib, it was Tamim who had picked up his first fifty as the ODI skipper of Bangladesh to lay the foundation for the win. Tamim, who started slowly, did not shy away from using his feet after getting into the groove. The southpaw smashed three fours and a maximum before being dismissed in the 26th over off a Raymon Reifer delivery.
Earlier, it was Mehidy Hasan Miraz who shone with the ball to help Bangladesh bundle out the visitors for just 148 in 43.4 overs. The off-spinner gave the Tigers a flying start after West Indies skipper Jason Mohammed had everyone amazed by deciding to bat first on a spin-friendly wicket. Miraz removed the top three Caribbean batsmen, leaving them in a spot of bother at 37 for three after 13.4 overs.
West Indies kept on losing wickets at regular intervals since then before Rovman Powell tried to stage a comeback with a resilient 66-ball 41 down the order. However, Mehidy came back in the attack at the latter stage of the game and wrapped it up by scalping the all-important wicket of Powell in the 44th over.
Shakib also returned economical figures of two for 30 in his 10 overs.
33.2 ov; BAN 138/3: Mushfiqur Rahim sweeps a wide delivery from Akeal Hosein and takes a single and that helps Bangladesh win the three-match ODI series 2-0 with the final ODI yet to be played.
Tamim falls soon after picking up fifty
25.1 ov; BAN 109/3: Just after picking up his first fifty as the ODI skipper of Bangladesh, Tamim Iqbal edges a Raymon Reifer delivery back to the Windies wicketkeeper. Tamim tries to cut an outside off delivery but fails to connect it properly as the ball gets a thick outside edge. The Bangladesh ODI skipper departs after a well-played 76-ball 50. Shanto departs after scoring 17
16.2 ov; BAN 77/2: A short of a length delivery from West Indies skipper Jason Mohammed and it was there to be hit. And Najmul Hossain Shanto obliged as he went back and hit it hard but only to the fielder at short deep midwicket who did well to hold on a ball that was struck with immense power. Najmul, who has been vested the responsibility of batting at number three replacing premier all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, goes after scoring 17 off 26 deliveries. West Indies bowled out for 148
43.4; WI 148/10: Rovman Powell had built a last-wicket stand with youngster Akeal Hosein but this time has gone too far out of his crease as Miraz drags it back a bit. A wild swipe and Mushfiqur collects before taking off the bails. Windies have only managed 148 after winning the toss and electing to bat. This is also the very first time that Bangladesh have bowled an opponent out for under 150 runs in two consecutive matches. Mehedi has been the star with the ball with a four-fer. He ends with figures of 4 for 25 in 9.4 overs. Shakib and Fizz both bagged two wickets each. Rovman Powell st Mushfiqur Rahim b Mehidy Hasan Miraz 41 (66b 2x4 1x6) SR: 62.12
Mehedi talking to broadcasters: " I am really happy, because I wasn't happy with the areas I bowled in the first match. I spoke to senior players like Shakib and got some inputs from our spin bowling coach as well. I saw [Rovman] coming, and the wicketkeeeper, captain and Shakib bhai also told me that he was going to look to come forward. The idea was not to concede a six."

17.4 ov; WI 41/5: Mushfiqur takes the bails off after a throw from Najumul with Mayers short of his crease. There was confusion after the call from captain Jason Mohammad. Windies are in big trouble with five wickets down. Kyle Mayers run out (Najmul Hossain Shanto/Mushfiqur Rahim) 0 (9b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0
14.6 ov; WI 39/4: Shakib Al Hasan rolls his arms for another 'stick to basics and let the pitch do it's thing' delivery and McCarthy plays all around it, looking to whack it through mid-wicket and is castled as the ball maintains trajectory and goes straight with the angle. Andre McCarthy b Shakib Al Hasan 3 (7b 0x4 0x6) SR: 42.86
13.4; WI 37/1: Da Silva plays for the turn but Miraz's straighter delivery pitches and beats the outside edge before clipping the off stump. Toss
West Indies have won the toss and elected to bat in the second ODI against Bangladesh at Mirpur's Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
The pre-series focus had been on long-term planning and proper execution and, in that regard, the Tigers made a perfect start while also grabbing 10 points with a convincing six-wicket victory in their first match of the ODI Super League, the qualification pathway for the 2023 World Cup.
Premier all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan marked his return to Bangladesh colours following a year-long ban imposed by the ICC in 2019 for failing to report corrupt approaches by returning astounding figures of four wickets for eight runs from 7.2 overs and scooping the player-of-the-match award.
The weather is bright and sunny and the Tigers might be hoping for as good a start as the one they had with the ball in the first ODI.
