Training sessions in Sri Lanka to hold sway in squad selection
After a break of five months imposed by the coronavirus pandemic, the national cricket team are once again gearing up for a series. The Tigers are preparing for the away Test tour of Sri Lanka, scheduled to begin from October 24. The players have been reduced to individual training so far due to the coronavirus situation in the country and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chief selector Minhajul Abedin hinted that the most important aspects of the team's training following the big break will take place in Sri Lanka.
Minhajul informed that the final squad for the Tests will only be decided after they have trained and played in practice matches on Lankan soil. Tigers are to leave for Sri Lanka on the tentative date of September 23.
"We have a few practice matches in Sri Lanka and we will be announcing the main squad after we go there. A preliminary squad is going there but the training sessions in Sri Lanka are going to be very important since the break of five months was a long one for everyone. How they can cope and get ready for international cricket will be evaluated.
"Three tests will be done in the country and then the players will be tested again in Sri Lanka," Minhajul added.
"We're taking 20 to 22 players and the squad will be ready by the first week of September. The main squad of 15 will be decided there," he said.
The Bangladesh players are to be tested for coronavirus on September 18. The BCB are readying a pool of 38 players in case they need backup players due to positive cases within the squad. "The HP team of 24 members will also be there so we are trying to balance things so that we can provide someone as backup when needed."
