Tigers unscathed in quake-hit NZ
A tsunami warning for coastal areas in New Zealand was issued -- and later withdrawn -- after the northeastern coast of the country was hit by a powerful earthquake on Thursday night. However, Bangladesh cricketers, who are currently in New Zealand for their upcoming three ODIs and three T20Is, were unscathed.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury confirmed the Tigers' condition.
"I talked to them [the team management]. And they confirmed that everyone is fine. No one even noticed the earthquake as it was late at night and everyone was already sleeping," said Nizamuddin to The Daily Star.
The 7.3 magnitude earthquake hit the nation after Friday midnight [local time].
New Zealand's National Emergency Management Agency also initially warned of a tsunami threat along the east of the country's North Island.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered at a depth of 20.8 kilometers (13 miles) under the ocean about 174 kilometers (108 miles) northeast of the city of Gisborne.
Bangladesh are scheduled to play three ODIs, starting from March 20 in Dunedin. The next two games are scheduled for March 23 and 26 in Christchurch and Wellington respectively.
The visitors will then take part in the first T20I on March 28 in Hamilton before the second and third T20Is are played in Napier and Auckland on March 30 and April 1.
