Star-studded Gazi suffer heavy defeat
In chase of a 145-run target set by Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club, the star-studded Gazi Group Cricketers suffered a batting collapse and eventually lost by 36 runs in their Bangabandhu Dhaka Premier Division T20 League encounter under lights at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur today.
Even though Doleshwar openers -- Imran Uzzaman and Towfiq Khan -- failed to capitalise on their decent starts, a 65-run third-wicket stand between young Saif Hassan and Fazle Mahmud provided Doleshwar a solid foundation in a slow Mirpur pitch.
Saif scored a run-a-ball 37 while Fazle struck a 31-ball 39, laced with three boundaries and a six. Later on, a quick-fire 25 from Shamim Hossain helped Doleshwar post a competitive 144 for six.
For Gazi Group, skipper Mahmudullah Riyad, Nasum Ahmed and Mukidul Islam picked two wickets each.
Following the exchange, the prominent batting lineup of Gazi Group collapsed dreadfully as they lost their first four wickets -- those of Shahdat Hossain (13 off 10), Soumya Sarkar (9 off 10), Mominul Haque (7 off 10) and Mahmudullah (0 off 2) -- scoring only 39 runs in 6.1 overs.
Ariful Haque's 34-ball 37 at the death did not amount to much as Gazi Group were eventually bundled out for 108 runs in 18.5 overs.
Shamim Hossain, who remained handy with the willow, picked up a couple of wickets giving away only 17 runs in four overs and was announced the player-of-the-match.
