Shakib rage takes focus off Mohammedan victory
Mohammedan Sporting Club emerged as winners against arch-rivals Abahani Limited in a Bangabandhu Dhaka Premier Division T20 League game that was embroiled with Shakib Al Hasan-related controversy at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur today.
It was also the first time that Mohammedan defeated Abahani since the 2015-2016 season.
After posting a competitive 145 for six, Mohammedan restricted Abahani to 44 for six in nine overs, winning the rain-interrupted game by 31 runs via D/L method. Abahani's target was reduced to 76 runs in nine overs after resumption following a lengthy rain-induced break.
Mohammedan skipper Shakib Al Hasan, who has been struggling for form, especially with the bat, showed a glimpse of return to old self with the willow as the top all-rounder scored a team-high of 27-ball 37 to help his side post a competitive total.
The main highlight of the game was however the unprecedented incident that took place in the fifth over during Abahani's chase. Having lost wickets of three of their top-order batsmen -- all to Mohammedan spinner Shuvagata Hom, who was adjudged player-of-the-match for his 3 for 17 in his three overs -- Abahani were already struggling during their chase of a decent target.
Mohammedan skipper Shakib came to bowl in the fifth over of the game and was greeted with a six and a boundary in the second and third ball of the over by Abahani skipper Mushfiqur Rahim. Shakib, however, bamboozled his national teammate in the final delivery with a witty arm ball that hit Mushfiqur on his pads. But, despite a loud appeal, the umpire denied it and that's when the premier all-rounder lost his cool and kicked the stumps out of rage.
He was, however, not done yet. With dark clouds hovering, the umpires decided to call covers to be brought on in the next over and Shakib came hurriedly towards the umpire and uprooted the stumps and slammed it in a fit of rage.
The match was resumed after 81 minutes following rain with Abahani's target shortened. With 45 required off the final 19 deliveries, Abahani could only manage to score 13 runs more as the Sky Blues were restricted to 44 for six after nine overs.
Meanwhile, at BKSP 4, all-rounder Mehedi Hasan Miraz scalped two wickets for 15 in his four overs, featuring a maiden, before scoring an unbeaten 10-ball 12 to help his side Khelaghar Samaj Kallyan Samity beat Partex Sporting Club by 15 runs (via D/L method) in a curtailed over game.
In another curtailed-over contest at the BKSP 3, Gazi Group defeated Brothers Union by 15 runs (D/L method).
