‘An opportunity to do what no Bangladeshi sides have done before’

26 international games and no win for Bangladesh in New Zealand. This stat alone is a bit staggering considering the Tigers have had resounding success against the Kiwis while playing at home.

However, according to Bangladesh head coach Russell Domigo, this tour of New Zealand will be an opportunity for the Tigers to do something that no Bangladesh sides have done before -- changing their abysmal away record against the Kiwis.

"We see it as an opportunity for us to do something that no Bangladeshi sides have done before," said Domingo to the New Zealand media today ahead of their first of three ODIs in Dunedin on March 20.

The Tigers had a five-day training camp in Queenstown where they played an inter-squad practice game involving a few local players. The Tamim Iqbal-led troops today arrived in Dunedin, the venue for the first ODI and had their first practice session at the University Oval, Dunedin. The ODI series will be followed by three T20Is to be played on March 28, 30, and April 1 in Hamilton, Napier, and Auckland respectively.

Bangladesh had announced the squad for this tour keeping in mind the prospects for the 2023 World Cup in India. And Domingo also realized that the Tigers would need to make a statement in this series if they are to be considered as one of the contenders in cricket's next quadrennial event.

"This is my first tour to New Zealand with Bangladesh. I have been here with South Africa before. So, I know it's a tough place to tour. There is a World Cup three years away and New Zealand are one of the top sides in the world. So, if we want to be serious contenders for an event like that in India then we have got to put big performances in series like this," added Domingo.

Bangladesh went to New Zealand with seven specialist pacers in their 20-member squad for both ODIs and T20Is. And Domingo believed that it's some of the young pacers like Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud who could prove to be the x-factor for Bangladesh in the upcoming series.

"I think the 50-over format is probably our strongest format at the moment. If you look at the team's performance in the [2019] World Cup, the averages of players [then you will see that] we have got some good numbers in One Day cricket.

"I do think that we have got some young fast bowlers coming through that maybe New Zealand have not seen before and maybe they are not expecting to see. We have got some good potential. Guys like Hasan Mahmud, Taskin Ahmed are bowling nicely. So, we are excited by some of our young fast bowlers," Domingo said when asked about the strengths of the Bangladesh side.
