Mashrafe pays tribute to winners of '97

It was on this day, 23 years ago, that Khaled Masud Pilot hit the first delivery of the last over, bowled by Martin Suji for six as Bangladesh inched closer to the 11 needed for victory in that final over. Then a gritty pull from Hasibul Hossain Shanto took them to touching distance before a leg-bye in the last delivery sealed Bangladesh their most memorable win as they clinched the 1997 ICC Trophy by beating Kenya in the final.
It remains to this day, the most iconic image of Bangladesh cricket.
Before that, the semifinal clash against Scotland was a crucial encounter too with anything less than a victory would have seen Bangladesh fail to make it to the World Cup yet again. The likes of Akram Khan, Minhajul Abedin, Pilot, Shanto and Mohammad Rafique prevailed and brought glory to Bangladesh.
They became the national heroes of the country and former ODI captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza paid tribute to the team of 1997.
"The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." ― what a big step it was! 13th April, 1997," Mashrafe wrote on his Facebook page.
Bangladesh became unbeaten champions in that tournament and to this day, cricket lovers in the country revere that moment in history. It generated faith in cricket and inspired a generation of players to take up cricket. Indeed, a big step for the country's cricket.
