Bangladesh Games to continue, football leagues to be suspended
Bangladesh Olympic Association's secretary general Syed Shahed Reza today told media that the Bangabandhu 9th Bangladesh Games will continue as planned during the nationwide lockdown.
The BOA high-ups, on Saturday, had said that they would take a decision whether to continue with the Games after a circular from the government regarding the seven-day lockdown is issued.
However, Reza today told reporters that they are confident of completing the Games with assurance from the government.
"Inshallah Bangladesh Games will continue. We are trying to complete the remainder of the events by following health protocols," Reza said following a visit to the Bangabandhu National Stadium where athletics events are being held.
"The government definitely knows about this and we will definitely get a positive response in this regard. We have had talks with everyone and have been assured that the Games can continue," Reza added.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Football Federation has decided, in principle, to suspend all footballing activities once the circular is issued.
"We have decided, in principle, that all football events will stay suspended till at least after one week of the end of the lockdown. This will be effective from the time we get the government circular on lockdown," BFF general secretary Abu Nayeem Shohag told The Daily Star today.
This means the ongoing Women's League and Third Division League will be suspended while the Bangladesh Premier League and the Bangladesh Championship League, which were set to resume within the next four to eight days, will not get underway. The football events of the Bangabandhu 9th Bangladesh Games will, however, continue to be held under the jurisdiction of BOA.
