Ex cops held on extortion charge

Two former policemen were arrested at Talgasi Bazar in Shahzadpur upazila of Sirajganj district on Saturday on charge of collecting illegal toll from the traders. The arrestees are Abdul Hye Sarker, 68, former sub-inspector of Sirajganj district special branch and Ainul Haque, 50, former constable of the branch. Officer in-charge of Shahzadpur police station Hasan Shamim Iqbal said locals caught the duo around 6:00pm when they demanded Tk 20,000 from a number of traders, including oil trader Matiur Rahman and former UP chairman Abdul Jabbar. They were later handed over to Shazadpur police, said the OC. The arrestees were collecting illegal toll from the traders in guise of special branch members, he said.
Housewife murdered

A housewife was murdered allegedly by her husband at Sahata village in Barhatta upazila of the district early yesterday. The deceased is Minara Begum, 26, wife of Ekhlash Mia of the village. Police quoted locals as saying that the couple engaged in an altercation over cooking meals for Sehri around 2:30am. At one stage of their hot exchange of words, Ekhlash hit Minara with a lethal weapon on her head, leaving her dead on the spot and fled the scene. On information, police covered the body and sent it to Netrokona Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy. A case was filed with Barhatta Police Station in this connection.
Youth held on rape charge

A youth was arrested at Barapoit village in Sadar upazila of Habiganj district on Saturday on charge of raping a minor girl. The arrestee is Sabuj Miah, 19, son of Tara Miah of the village in the upazila, said Ibrahim Ahmed, sub-inspector of Habiganj Sadar police station. Sabuj violated the girl around 6:30pm on Saturday when she was going to her grandmother's house, said family sources. Hearing the hue and cry, locals rescued the victim from the spot and sent her to Habiganj Sadar Hospital. Following a case filed by the mother of the girl, police arrested Sabuj at 9:30pm, said the SI.
Grocer hacked to death

A grocer was hacked to death at his shop in Kellabandh-Baniyapara area of the city on Friday afternoon. The dead is Abul Hossain, 55, son of late Kachhim Uddin of the area. He ran a flexi-load business besides grocery in front of his house. Ariffuzzaman Apel, son of the deceased, said “Local criminal Ferdaus, son of Shamser Ali of the same area, came to the shop to recharge his mobile phone on Thursday night. He quarreled with him over delay in recharging”. As a sequel to the conflict, Ferdaus, his father Shamser Ali and their accomplices went to the shop around 3:00pm on Friday and attacked Abul Hossain with sharp weapons, leaving him dead on the spot, said Apel. A murder case was filed, accusing 10 people, including Ferdaus and his father Shamser Ali, said police.
65 hurt in B'baria clash

At least 65 people were injured in a clash between two rival groups of CNG-run auto-rickshaw drivers at Bitghar village in Sarail upazial yesterday. Of the injured, 52 were admitted to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital while the rest given first aid. Police and locals said, an altercation took place between two drivers of CNG-run auto-rickshaw--- Rukku Mia of Memberbari and Liton Mia of Sardarbari--over driving serial of the auto-rickshaw and its fare four days back. As a sequel to the conflict, the supports of the rivals attacked each other with lethal weapons yesterday afternoon, leaving at least 65 people from both sides injured. On information, police rushed to the spot and fired 44 rubber bullets and 12 tear gas shells to bring the situation under control, said OC Md Arshad of Sarail police station.
