'Missing' boy found dead

Police recovered the body of a 'missing' schoolboy from a jute field at Balarampur village in Tala upazila yesterday morning. The dead is Jahid Moral, son of farmer Shariful Moral of the village and a student of Class VI at Islamkati Parbatinath Secondary School. He remained missing since Monday. Locals found his body in the field and informed the police who sent it to Satkhira Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. The body bore several injury marks, said Abu Bakkar Siddique, officer in-charge of Tala Police Station.

70,440 chocolate bombs seized

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized at least 70,440 chocolate bombs from Phulbari upazila yesterday morning. However, none was arrested in this connection, said an official of BGB-40 Battalion. On secret information, the BGB men raided Krishnapur village and seized the chocolate bombs worth Tk 3.65 lakh, said Lt Col Zahidur Rashid, commanding officer of the battalion.

Man hacked to death

Police recovered the body of an unidentified man, aged about 60, from Thakurtak village of Sirajganj Sadar upazila yesterday morning. Md Habibul Islam, officer in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said locals found his body in the area beside Sirajganj-Mulibari bypass and informed the police who sent it to Sirajganj General Hospital morgue for autopsy. He was hacked to death, said the OC. The reason behind the killing could not be known immediately, he said.

Kid drowns in pond

A child drowned in a pond at Naduria village in Atghoria upazila on Wednesday afternoon. The dead is Md Abdullah, 3, son of Shentu Miah of the village. Locals said Abdullah accidentally fell into the pond near their house while playing on its bank and drowned. Later, family members recovered the body from the water.

Man gets life for killing wife

A Sirajganj court on Wednesday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for killing his wife for dowry in 2010. The lifer is Haider Ali, son of Jadab Ali, of Purna village in Raiganj upazila. According to the prosecution, Haider strangled his wife Asma Khatun following an altercation over dowry on March 29, 2010. Later a case was filed with Raiganj Police Station, accusing Haider in this connection. After investigation, police submitted charge sheet against Haider on August 31 the same year. After examining witnesses and evidence, Sirajganj Additional District and Sessions Judge Fazle Miah found him guilty and pronounced the verdict.

Three electrocuted

Three people were electrocuted and two others injured in Sadar upazila yesterday morning. The deceased are Sabbir Hossain Rahman Shuvo, 18, son of Mozibar Rahman, Mosaddeque Hossain, 45, son of Mozammel Hoque and Sadequl Islam, 18, son of Mofizur Rahman of Kismat Madhabpur village. Police said the five came in contact with an electric pole in the morning. Of them, the trio died on the spot. Injured Md Mofizur Rahman, 40, and Sohana Akter Mitu, 17, were admitted to Dinajpur Medical College and Hospital.
