Controversial 'Touch Me Not' Snags the Golden Bear!

In an achievement that has come as a surprise to many, the Romanian drama film Touch Me Not has won the prestigious Golden Bear award at the 68th Berlin International Film Festival. Held from 15 to 25 February, 2018, the 68th iteration of the revered award ceremony was as glamorous as ever, pushing experimental cinema and international films to newer heights. However, by Touch Me Not, a movie about a woman researching the concept of sexuality, winning the best prize of the event was a move not everyone seemed to have appreciated. An article in The Guardian deemed Touch Me Not to possess “a fatuous and shallow approach to its ostensible theme of intimacy”, which apparently is “a calamity to the prestige of the festival”. However, other sources have praised the experimental approach in which the director Adina Pintilie brought out the different perspectives in how beauty can be seen. All in all, the Jury agreed on Touch Me Not, controversial or not, to be deserving of the Golden Bear, so in the end, did the achievement alone define the film's success? Only time will tell!
