‘‘Bullitt” Mustang fetches record 3.7 million USD auction price
The 1968 Ford Mustang GT featured in the film "Bullitt" was sold at the annual Mecum collector car aution in Kissimmee, Floridafor 3.7 million USD last Friday, making it the most expensive Mustang ever sold.
Driven by Steve McQueen in the film's award winning chase scene through the streets of San Francisco, the Highland Green Mustang is an icon among muscle car enthusiasts. Although wearing faded paint, the car is in decent shape and still retains some of the modification it received during filming.
After filming, the car was used by Warner Bros. employees, eventually being sold to a New Jersey detective in 1970. In 1974, the car was sold a Robert Kiernan, and has been in his family since. Interestingly, in the late 1970's, Steve McQueen tracked the car down and wanted to buy it off Robert, but was refused.
Robert's son Sean later revealed the car to the world and eventually put it up for sale at the auction, where it fetched the record price from a buyer who wished to remain anonymous.
