None of accused BCL men held yet
Though three days have elapsed since businessman Ahsan Habib Sumu was shot dead by a group of Bangladesh Chhatra League activists of Comilla Victoria Government College unit, the accused in the murder case are yet to be arrested.
Firoz Hossain, investigation officer of the case and sub-inspector of Kotwali Model Police Station, said, "Saleh Ahmed Russell [the prime accused in the murder case] used to control his loyalists from Nazrul Hall. We have conducted a raid there, but could not find anyone."
Most of the rooms of the dormitory were found under lock and key yesterday afternoon, he said.
Sources in the BCL said the other members of the gang were, among others, college unit BCL activists Shakil alias Chhota Shakil, Ripon, Saiful, Zakir, Khokon and Shah Paran.
However, Mizanur Rahman Ratul, BCL acting general secretary of the college unit, said the accused were not included in the BCL committee. He added that Saleh and his supporters had been using the name of the organisation for their own interest.
But some of the students, on condition of anonymity, said the accused were involved in the politics of the college unit of BCL.
Room no. 353 of Kabi Nazrul Hall was used as Saleh's torture cell, they said, adding that Saleh, former organising secretary of BCL of the college unit, and his men had previous criminal records too.
He brandished his firearms at a procession protesting BNP's hartal on March 5 last year.
A number of sources said Saiful and Shakil assaulted general students for not inviting the former to a debate competition in the college auditorium on March 25.
Saiful also allegedly shot a 1st year student of the college in the leg on March 6 inside a classroom, said the sources.
Lawmaker of Comilla-6 AKM Bahauddin Bahar, also Sumu's uncle, said, "Police have been asked to arrest all accused in the case. None of the killers will be spared."
On Thursday, following a clash, Saleh and his men swooped on the residence of Shajib Chakrabarti alias Gittu at Munshefbari in Monoherpur and attacked his cousin Pritom.
Witnessing the incident from a neighbouring house, Sumu rushed to the spot to save Pritom. But one of the attackers shot Sumu in the back, leaving him critically injured.
He was immediately rushed to Comilla Medical College Hospital where the doctors pronounced him dead.
A case was filed Thursday night accusing 15 named and 25 unnamed people.
