Need for Speed back in form?

nfs

Ferraris. Lamborghinis. Street racing. Cop chases. Playing as a cop. Brilliant gameplay, great graphics. That's all there is to say about the latest Need for Speed game, really, and all you need to know for you to go and get this game, right now.
If you still need more convincing, here goes. Set in Redview County, the game thankfully does away with any unnecessary bits, like a story. Much like the reboots of Hot Pursuit or Most Wanted, the point here is to drive exotics in an open world, make the police mad, and stay out of their reach.

nfs1
You have access to some of the coolest metal on four wheels out there, even newer hyper exotics like the McLaren P1 and Ferrari F12 Berlinetta. Ferrari has returned to a street racing NFS title after almost a decade long hiatus (the last street racing based NFS game to feature them was the original Hot Pursuit), and honestly, we were drooling at the prospect of taking red hot pieces of Italian exotica out on the open road.
The gameplay is much improved, and the developers (Ghost Games; Criterion, although they did brilliantly, are no longer at the helm anymore) have found a near perfect balance when it comes to the handling and driving dynamics. Its still arcade-style racing, but its not unnaturally free flowing like in the Hot Pursuit reboot, neither is it like the clunky, sawtooth handling like in the rebooted Most Wanted game. Cars feel planted and responsive when driven right, the way it should be.
The races are exciting and the open world elements make it an adrenaline pumping experience. You win in any way possible, and if that means swerving off road and destroying the countryside to pave your own shortcut or escape the cops, then so be it. The freedrive is fun and if you have an imagination, its doubly so. Pretend you just stole that Porsche and drive it like you stole it.

nfs2
You can play as a cop too, cruising the countryside, busting racers with sirens and lights flashing. Fun stuff.
Graphics is good. The lighting feels a little outlandish, and the weather effects a little too pronounced to feel real, but then you realize you're in a game where a Koenigsegg Agera can be a police car, and people street race with million dollar hypercar Pagani Huyaras. This game isn't supposed to be a realistic portrayal of street racing, and you accept that after a while because you're having so fun.
Sad news for the tuner geeks. There's no car customisation per se, just colour, rim colour, license plates and internal performance modifications. There's also a distinct lack of Japanese cars, other than the Nissan GTR. Why, EA games? Why cant you ever reach a balance with the list of cars?

nfs3
Complaints: You just have two camera angles, one where you cant see the car (road view) and another where the car fills the entire screen and you cant see the road properly. A little more realism in terms of the pursuit tech would be nicer, too.  Its not much of a drain on PC system requirements, a mid-high range PC should be enough to run the game smoothly while letting you enjoy the view of the fictional Redview County.  Overall, great game for pretending to be a high-flyer who can afford to street race with Lamborghinis and Paganis. Go get your copy now.
