40 houses gutted in Gazipur fire

Around 40 houses were gutted in a fire at Boiragirchala village in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur yesterday afternoon.
Arif Hossain, 30, and Alam Hossain, 30, were injured as they tried to douse the blaze.
Gazipur Fire Station Officer Abu Zafar said the fire, which might have originated from an electric short circuit, had been extinguished by locals before fire fighters reached the spot.

 

'Criminal' shot in 'gunfight' with cops

An alleged criminal was shot in a 'gunfight' with police in the capital's Jatrabari Saturday night.
Liton, 30, was arrested and rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital with leg injuries.
A Jatrabari police team in plainclothes raided a rickshaw garage on Abu Haji Road, says a press release.
Later, among five criminals, Liton opened fire on the police, prompting them to fire back, injuring him. The other four fled.
Police recovered a pistol from Liton's possession.

 

Man sent to jail for double murder

A court yesterday rejected bail prayer of an accused in a case filed against him for killing his two brothers.
The court sent Abul Kalam Azad to jail after he surrendered before it.
On July 22, Kalam allegedly stabbed his brothers Abu Sufian, 45, and Abu Morshed, 35, to death in their Sultanpur village home in Raozan of Chittagong over land dispute. Sufian's wife later filed a case with Raozan police.

 

Advance Eid train tickets being sold in Khulna

Advance sale of tickets of inter-city trains has been going on at Khulna Railway Station since Friday ahead of Eid.
Adequate measures have been taken to prevent ticket scalping at the station, said Khulna Railway Station Master Amirul Islam.
The tickets for August 4, 5 and 6 were sold out and the tickets for August 7 and 8 will be available today and tomorrow respectively, he added. The tickets are selling from 9:00am to 6:00pm every day.

 

Two hacked in Khulna

A gang of criminals hacked two employees of a shrimp export company near Rupsha Bridge in Batiaghata upazila of Khulna early yesterday.
GM Liaquat Ali, 46, of Kalikapur in Koyra and Md Sakib Howlader, 25, of Khalishpur in the city work at Fresh Food Ltd at Elaipur in Rupsha upazila.
Police and victims said the criminals travelling in a microbus attacked them with sharp weapons after halting their motorbike.
The injured were admitted to Khulna Sadar Hospital.

 

Body found in Gazipur

The body of an unidentified young man was found beside Kaliakoir-Dhamrai road in Mahrabaha area in Kaliakor upazila of Gazipur yesterday.
Locals discovered the body and informed police about it.Police rushed to the spot and sent the body to Gazipur Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
The body bore injury marks in the head, said police sources. A case was filed in this connection.
