Judges' salary hike Raise 30pc salary by May 16: SC
The Supreme Court on April 25directed the government to raise 30 percent pay scale to the lower court judges by May 16. It also ordered the government to provide selection grade to the district judges, who have already completed five years in their posts, by the period. The Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain passed the order after rejecting a government petition seeking time for formulating a law regarding rising the salary of lower court judges. Earlier on April 21 and 22, the apex court heard argument from six senior lawyers on the government petition. The senior lawyers are: Dr Kamal Hossain, TH Khan, Rokanuddin Mahmud, Rafique-ul Huq, AF Hasan Ariff and Tawfique Newaz. The government on April 16 submitted the petition seeking time from the apex court to implement its order for hiking salaries of lower court judges. However, the government, in the petition, said it was planning to formulate a law in this regard.-The Daily Star online edition April 25 2013.
Mobarak indicted
Mobarak Hossain, former Jamaat-e-Islami member who later got affiliated with ruling Awami League, has been charged with committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971. The International Crimes Tribunal-1 on April 23 framed five charges against Mobarak in five specific incidents of murder, abduction, confinement, torture and loot. At least 36 people were killed and two others tortured in those incidents occurring between August 22 and November 29 in 1971. The charges against Mobarak are killing of 33 unarmed civilians at Tanmandayl in Akhaura; capture of a Hindu temple, renaming Anandamoyee Kalibari as Razakar Manzil and torturing Ashu Ranjan to death; abduction and murder of Abdul Khaleque of Satian village, abduction and torture of Khadem Hossain Khan; and abduction of Abdul Malek of Kharampur and killing of Mohammad Siraj.-The Daily Star April 24 2013.
Challenging Magistrate's Action HC rejects Huji leader's petition
The High Court on April 22 rejected a petition filed by Huji leader Mufti Abdul Hannan challenging the legality of a magistrate's action in recording his confessional statement involving Tarique Rahman in connection with the August 21 grenade attack. The rejection came as per the HC bench's consideration that the petition was not placed before it. On February 3, AHM Habibur Rahman Bhuiyan, the then additional chief metropolitan magistrate, told a Dhaka court that Hannan in his confessional statement named some intelligence and political bigwigs, including Khaleda Zia's son Tarique, as the attack's masterminds. Habibur had recorded Hannan's confessional statement in 2011. Judge Shahed Nuruddin of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 of Dhaka recorded Habibur's statement. Harkatul Jihad al Islami (Huji) leader Hannan filed the petition with the HC in February this year for expunging Habibur's February 3 statement. - The Daily Star April 23 2013.
Cancelling Remand HC rejects petition for Mahmudur
The High Court on April 21 summarily rejected the writ petition for cancelling the remand of acting editor of daily Amar Desh Mahmudur Rahman after it heard argument on the petition on April 18. The grounds upon which the HC rejected the petition could not be known as the court did not release the full text of the order. The petition was filed with the HC on April 17 by Mahmudur's wife Firoza Mahmud seeking its directive on the government to cancel the remand. Detectives arrested Mahmudur on April 11 from the daily's office on charges of publishing a Skype conversation between Justice Md Nizamul Huq, then chairman of International Crimes Tribunal-1, and Ahmed Ziauddin, an expatriate Bangladeshi legal expert.- The Daily Star April 22 2013.
