Journos demo demanding trial of Sagar-Runi killer Apr 11

Meherun Runi and Sagar Sarowar Meherun Runi and Sagar Sarowar Journalists will stage demonstrations before press club across the country on April 11 to press home their four-point demand including the arrest and trial of the killers of journalist couple Sagar and Runi. Sagar Sarowar, a news editor at private TV channel Maasranga, and his wife Meherun Runi, a senior reporter at ATN Bangla, were murdered in their rented West Rajabazar residence in the capital on February 11 last year. Other demands of journalists include trial of the killings of all journalists, ensuring security for journalists and freedom of the press. Ruhul Amin Gazi, president of a faction of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), announced the programme while speaking at a rally in front of Jatiya Press Club in the capital on Monday. Addressing the rally, the journalist leader also demanded resignation of Home Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir for law enforcer's failure to unearth the clue behind the murder of Sagar and Runi. He also demanded resignation of Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu for his criticism on different national dailies. He said that they will go for tougher movement if the ministers are not resigned immediately. The BNP-Jamaat factions of BFUJ, Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) and Jatiya Press Club organised the rally that began around noon. Around 100 journalists from different media outlets took part in the demonstration which continued till 1:30pm. Shawkat Mahmud, secretary general of a faction of BFUJ and Kamaluddin Sabuj, president of Jatiya Press Club and its General Secretary Syed Abdal Ahmed also spoke at the rally. Earlier in the morning, Gazi informed that they had postponed their 24-hour work abstention programme scheduled for Monday considering the prevailing political situation of the country. Earlier on February 11, Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, president of a faction of BFUJ, announced the programme from a rally in the capital.
