HC summons Biman chairman over possible contempt of court
The High Court yesterday summoned the chairman of the board of directors of Biman Bangladesh Airlines Ltd, Jamaluddin Ahmed, on September 17 over a contempt of court charge.
It also issued a rule upon Jamaluddin and two others concerned to explain in two weeks why contempt of court proceedings should not be brought against them for not honouring two HC judges.
Court sources said Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam and Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque were returning to Dhaka from Kolkata on economy class of a Biman flight (BG 092) on July 1.
Ruling Awami League lawmaker Rahmat Ali, who happened to be there alongside Jamaluddin, requested the crew and captain to provide the judges business class seats since some were vacant.
As per an earlier HC judgement and warrant of precedence, judges flying in economy class seats must be provided business class seats, if any is vacant.
But, the crew and captain did not respond while Jamaluddin, who witnessed the incident, did not take any step to honour the judges, the sources said.
Yesterday, the HC bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain issued the rule on a suomoto move against Jamaluddin, Biman's managing director and the captain to explain their conducts over the incident.
