Four key factors affecting tiger conservation
Tiger experts and conservationists identified four key factors affecting tiger conservation at the first general assembly of the Global Tiger Forum in Dhaka yesterday.
They include the a) adoption of cyclical reviews to determine the effectiveness of conservation projects on tiger populations, b) the establishment of a time frame for tiger countries to provide financial support, c) a renewed commitment from tiger countries to stop the trade in tiger parts, and d) bilateral agreements on cross border co-operation.
The three-day assembly, which features conservationists and tiger experts from 14 countries, will release it final recommendations tomorrow.
"The forum is going to make recommendation tomorrow for a proactive role on cross boundary co-operation for conservation of tigers in their habitat," S.C. Dey, the forum's secretary general, told the Daily Star at the conclusion of the second day.
In addition to conservation issues, the assembly considered several administrative details on the second day. The United Kingdom joined the forum, while the International Fund for Animal Welfare, a U.S. based organisation, expressed its willingness to join.
Stanley P. Johnson, a senior advisor for International Affairs, said forum will consider the fund's request.
