Dhaka opens consulate in Kunming
Bangladesh has opened a consulate general's office in Kunming, the capital city of Yunnan province in Southwest China, in the wake of growing business opportunities between the two countries.
Foreign ministry officials said Shahnaz Gazi, a deputy consul general of the consulate general of Bangladesh in Los Angeles, has been appointed as its consular general.
Shahnaz is the first female career diplomat of Bangladesh who got the appointment in this post, they said adding that she will join her new office in a day or two.
Bangladeshi businessmen had long been demanding opening of a consulate general's office in Kunming, which is considered to be the China's gateway to the South Asia and a growing business hub.
Moreover, the government is also planning to operate regular Biman flights from Dhaka to Kunming to enhance the economic relations between the two countries, said a top government official.
Both the governments of Bangladesh and China have been working to establish railways and road communications between Kunming and Chittagong, the official said.
