The National Citizen Party (NCP) held demonstrations in Brahmanbaria and Savar today, demanding a ban on the Awami League (AL) and the trial of its leaders.

In Brahmanbaria, the district unit of NCP organised a protest march from the Municipal Mukta Mancha, concluding in front of the Press Club this afternoon, where a rally was later held.

The event was presided over by Azizul Rahman Liton, former chairman of Suhilpur Union Parishad in Brahmanbaria's Sadar upazila.

NCP Joint Convener Ashraf Uddin Mahdi, Joint Chief Organiser Md Ataullah, and Organizer Abdullah Al Mahmud Jihan, among others, addressed the gathering.

During the demonstration, speakers said the politics of the Awami League and Sheikh Hasina would not be rehabilitated in Bangladesh.

They said AL should not be allowed to participate in elections until judicial proceedings against its leaders are completed.

They also reiterated their demand for the trial of accused AL members.

In Savar, NCP leaders staged a procession in the morning, calling for the prosecution of Awami League leaders for mass killings, the cancellation of the party's registration, and a ban on its organisational activities.

They later formed a human chain in front of the National Memorial in Savar.

During the event, speakers said Sheikh Hasina has no right to participate in politics. They warned that action would be taken against anyone attempting to reinstate the Awami League.

"If the interim government tries to bring them back, we will remove them through a movement and form a revolutionary government," they added.

NCP central committee member Asadul Islam (Mukul) and district member Maulana Shahidullah Shoaib, among others, were present at the human chain.

Following the human chain, protesters demonstrated on the highway, chanting slogans demanding a ban on AL.

A Facebook post by NCP leader Hasnat Abdullah early yesterday sparked intense public debate and further demonstrations over the demand to ban AL.

Hasnat alleged that there was an ongoing conspiracy to rehabilitate the Awami League in accordance with India's plan.
