Ivy denied bail in July murder cases

A Narayanganj court today rejected the bail petitions of former Narayanganj City Corporation mayor Salina Hayat Ivy in two separate cases filed over murder and attempted murder charges during July uprising.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Haidar Ali passed the order following a hearing around noon, said Inspector Kaium Khan, in-charge of the court police outpost
Ivy, who was arrested from her residence in the city's Deobhog area on May 9 over killing garment worker Minarul Islam during the anti-discrimination student movement, is currently in judicial custody at Kashimpur Central Women's Jail.
According to court sources, the bail pleas were filed in two cases lodged with Siddhirganj Police Station — one over the killing of rickshaw-puller Md Tuhin and the other for the attempted murder of hawker Nadim. The court rejected both petitions after the hearing.
Meanwhile, in another case over the murder of garment worker Minarul Islam, another bail petition was submitted before Narayanganj District and Sessions Judge Abu Shamim Azad. As the hearing on a police petition seeking Ivy's remand is still pending, the court scheduled the bail hearing for May 27.
The remand hearing in the Minarul case is set for May 25, added Inspector Kaium.
Earlier, Ivy was shown arrested by police in connection with the Tuhin and Nadim cases with a court order on May 17. Ivy attended that hearing virtually from jail.
