Second Bangladesh War Course celebrates its golden jubilee

Members of the Second Bangladesh War Course, who were inducted as officer cadets in November 1971 -- to strengthen the Liberation Wartime officers corps -- and commissioned into Bangladesh Army on August 5, 1972, recently commemorated their 50th anniversary of commissioning.

At that time, the members underwent three months of training in India and six months of training in Dhaka.

The event was held on September 29 at Dhaka's Golf Garden.

The historic golden jubilee event, which was attended by a large number of senior freedom fighters, including the recipients of gallantry awards, was presided over by lawmaker Capt (retd) AB Tajul Islam, a member of the course.

Anchored by Major Abdus Salam, several course members, including Mahfuz Anam, editor and publisher of The Daily Star; MP Motahar Hossain; Maj Gen Jiban Kanai Das; former ambassador Maj Ashraf ud Doula; and Lt Col Mudassir Hossain Khan, addressed the gathering.

Two members of the First Bangladesh War Course -- Maj Abdul Matin Chowdhury and Lt Col Abdur Rouf, chief patron and president of Bangladesh War Courses Foundation, respectively -- also spoke on the occasion.

Chief of Army Staff General Shafiuddin Ahmed, who attended the programme as special guest, and Maj Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, former minister and one of the former training instructors in Dhaka, also addressed the event.

President Abdul Hamid, chief guest of the programme, had sent his congratulatory message.

The night's celebration ended with a cultural arrangement and dinner.
