Ex-BGB DG barred from travelling abroad

Former director general of Border Guard Bangladesh Lt Gen (Retd) Md Mainul Islam was barred from travelling abroad at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport today.
An official of immigration police at the airport confirmed it to The Daily Star.
Sources at the airport said Mainul and his wife arrived there to travel to Canada but the authorities concerned barred him and send back.
Maj Gen Mainul Islam was appointed as the BGB DG after Pilkhana carnage in which 74 people, including 57 army officials killed.
A brother of former mayor of the Dhaka North City Corporation Atiqul Islam, Mainul was later promoted to the post of Lieutenant General.
The government yesterday formed a seven-member commission to re-investigate the 2009 BDR (now Border Guard Bangladesh) massacre.
Golam Rasul, chief of Special Branch (SB) of police, told The Daily Star that Mainul Islam went to the airport to go to Toronto (Canadian city). He has been asked to cooperate with the commission formed to investigate the Pilkhana killings with information. Then, he will go abroad. He was not detained.
