Tarek Rahman, member secretary of the Am Janatar Dal, ended his hunger strike tonight following assurances from BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed.

Tarek broke his fast around 8:30pm in front of the main gate of the Election Commission (EC) building in Dhaka, where he had been staging the protest since November 4.

Party activists later transported him by ambulance to Gonoshasthaya Hospital for medical care.

Salahuddin, who was present at the scene, told Tarek, "You will file the appeal tomorrow. Some offices will be reformed in the meantime. Now, you should end your hunger strike."

Arif Billah, organisational secretary of Am Janatar Dal, told The Daily Star that Tarek had been carrying out a hunger strike demanding registration for his party for 135 hours. BNP's Salahuddin Ahmed came over and talked him into going to the hospital, he added.
