Prisoner of Ctg jail dies

He was accused in Bandarban bank looting case

An inmate of Chattogram Central Jail died at Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) while undergoing treatment on Wednesday, prison authorities said yesterday.

The deceased, Lal Yan Bawm, 30, was an accused in Bandarban's bank looting case and also an operative of the Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF), according to the prison authority. Lal Yan was an inmate of the Kananphuli-25 cell.

Md Iqbal Hossain, senior superintendent of Chattogram Central Jail, told The Daily Star, "The accused was brought to Chattogram Jail from Bandarban on June 29 last year. According to documents, he was a KNF operative and was arrested in connection with the bank looting case. He fell sick and complained of breathing difficulties and chest pain, after which the prison guards first rushed him to the prison hospital, and later he was shifted to CMCH."

"While undergoing treatment at CMCH, he died. We informed his family members and the administration, and the body will be handed over to the family after completing all legal procedures, including the postmortem examinations," he added.
