A leader of the ruling party was stabbed to death by unknown miscreants at the capital’s Motijheel this evening.
Khairul Mollah, 45, organising secretary of Demra thana AL, came under attack as he came out of the office of the chairman of Bangladesh Samabaya Bank Ltd around 6:00pm, witnesses said.
The witnesses said a gang of four to five attackers fired blank shots to create panic among people and stabbed the AL leader indiscriminately.
He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead around 6:50pm, said sources at the DMCH adding that five stab marks were found at the abdomen of the deceased.
Dhaka city Jubo League vice-president Ali Akbar Babul, who accompanied Mollah to the bank around 4:00pm, said, "We went to meet the chairman, as he was our childhood friend."
Mollah was also the general secretary of Sayedabad Bus Terminal Owners' Samity, said Babul.
While visiting the spot, this correspondent saw a running CCTV camera focusing on the spot but the deputy commissioner of Motijheel Division, Ashrafuzzaman, refused to disclose anything in this regard.
"We are looking into the matter. We need to check everything before we can comment," he said.
No one has been arrested yet and the motive behind the killing is still unclear.
