DU directs people to shut down Facebook pages run using its name

Persons running pages on Facebook using Dhaka University's name have been directed by the authorities to shut those down.
Requesting Facebook users not to consult such pages, the authorities also threatened the administrators with legal action unless they stop operating the pages, according to a press release.
In reference to the contents of these Facebook pages, the press release said, “Such contents are completely against the spirit of the university, and they belittle the university's reputation.”
'Daguerréotypes' to be screened at Dhaka Art Center today

Bangladesh Documentary Council, in cooperation with Dhaka Art Center will screen “Daguerréotypes”, a documentary of world famous French filmmaker Agnès Varda, today at the art centre in the capital's Dhanmondi.
A discussion session after the screening will also be held. The programmes are free for all, says a press release.
New phone numbers at US Embassy

As part of their transition to new fiber-optic phone lines, US Embassy phone numbers will move from 7 digits to 8 digits from Saturday.
The current prefix will change from 885 to 5566 but the new embassy switchboard number will not follow this pattern and will simply become 5566-2000. The new phone lines starting with 5566 are already active. The old lines starting with 885 will also remain active.
9.56kg of gold seized at Ctg airport

Customs intelligence officials detained a person with 82 gold bars, worth Tk 4 crore and weighing 9.56kg, at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong yesterday.
Mohammad Hussain, 29, of Anwara upazila in the district, was a passenger of Fly Dubai flight that landed at the airport at 10:30am.
The gold bars were hidden inside two belt-like objects, made of clothes, which were tied around his waist, said the officials.
Road crashes kill two

A garment official died when a car hit him while he was crossing the road in Chairmanbari area of the capital's Banani, reports our correspondent.
The deceased was Mrityunjay Acharjee Mithu, 40, an official of Masud Apparels Ltd. Police seized the car and arrested its driver Zafor Sadik.
Meanwhile, our Gaibandha correspondent adds Wahedul Islam, 32, of Gobindaganj upazila, died when a tractor-trolley hit his motorcycle on Bogra-Rangpur highway at Panthapara in the upazila.
Hizb-ut-Tahrir man held in capital

Rapid Action Battalion-1 arrested an alleged member of banned militant outfit Hizb-ut-Tahrir with “anti-state and anti-constitutional” posters in the capital's Dakkhinkhan on Wednesday.
On information, Rab arrested Jahangir Hossain, 22, son of Sharif Bhuiyan, who later admitted to his involvement with the outfit for some five years, said Rab officials.
Girl 'commits suicide' in Ctg

A teenage girl allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the window of their rented house in Pahartali area of Chittagong city yesterday.
The deceased was Payel Akther, daughter of Md Jahangir from Chandgaon area of Chittagong.
The reason behind the death could not be known. The body was sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for an autopsy, said police.
Fire breaks out at steel rolling mill

Machinery at a steel rolling mill in Moijjartek of Chittagong city was damaged by a fire yesterday.
The fire was originated from an electric short circuit at Ehsan Steel Rolling Mill around 7:30am, said fire officials, who estimated the damage Tk 1.15 crore.
Fire fighters doused the fire around 10:00am.
DU IBA admission test today

The admission test of four-year Bachelor of Business Administration programme at Dhaka University's Institute of business Administration (IBA) is scheduled to be held today.
Around 5,740 aspirants against 120 seats are likely to take part in the two-hour exam likely to begin at 10:00am, says a press release.
CCAS launched in Ctg

The launching ceremony of Chittagong Centre for Advanced Studies (CCAS) was held yesterday at Chittagong Independent University (CIU) auditorium in Jamalkhan area of Chittagong city.
John Scott Deyell, a Canadian researcher and writer on monetary history of South Asia, delivered a lecture in honour of Prof Emeritus Abdul Karim.
Shamshul Hossain, CCAS member secretary and Irshad Kamal Khan, CIU pro vice-chancellor, were present among others.
Ctg Samity-Dhaka 'Mejban' on Nov 29
