Jayalalithaa to remain in jail till October 7

The Special Sitting of the Karnataka High Court has adjourned Jayalalithaa's bail plea to Tuesday, October 7, 2014. Vacation judge Justice Rathnakala said that this matter has to be heard by a regular bench. Jayalalithaa, 66, was jailed for four years on Saturday over a graft case for amassing wealth illegaly.
Iraq violence killed 1,119 last month: UN

Acts of violence across Iraq killed at least 1,119 people last month, according to UN figures released yesterday excluding the restive western province of Anbar and casualties among jihadists. The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) said at least 854 civilians and 265 members of the security forces were killed in September, and close to 2,000 injured.
ECP ready to introduce electronic voting

After facing criticism over the quality of magnetised ink used in last year's general elections, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has decided to introduce electronic voting machines in two years and use them in next polls, due in 2018. ECP Secretary Ishtiak Ahmad Khan said the commission would call for an immediate amendment to the Constitution to remove legal barrier in the way of introducing the technology, after which the pilot project would be launched.
10 killed in shelling on school in east Ukraine

At least 10 people were killed yesterday when shells hit a school playground and a mini-van in a nearby street in Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, city authorities and Reuters witnesses said. There were no children among those killed in the shelling at School No 57 on the first day of the new school year, though witnesses said the dead included a biology teacher and the parent of a child at the school.
Madonna opens school in Karachi

Queen of Pop Madonna's school in Karachi has opened its gates to students. The 56-year-old "Material Girl" singer took to Twitter to announce that the Dream Model Street School has so far admitted 1,200 kids. Madonna announced last year that she was raising money to expand a school located in the outskirts of Karachi.
First Ebola case diagnosed in US

The United States has diagnosed its first case of Ebola in a man who was infected in Liberia and traveled to Texas, US health officials said Tuesday, pledging to contain the virus that has killed more than 3,000.
The man is also the first to be diagnosed outside Africa, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.
NSA reports win The Guardian Emmy

The Guardian US has won an Emmy for its groundbreaking coverage of Edward Snowden's disclosures about mass surveillance by US intelligence agencies. The Guardian's multimedia interactive feature NSA Decoded was announced as the winner in the new approaches: current news category at the news and documentary Emmy awards in New York on Tuesday night. Also nominated were the Wall Street Journal, the Seattle Times and the New York Times.
