Man shot in capital

Unidentified criminals shot an engineer of a private organisation in the capital's Mohammadpur area yesterday.
Rakib Al Mamun, 30, who sustained bullet injuries in the chest and left leg, was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Three to four persons intercepted Rakib's rickshaw near ASA University around 11:45am, dragged him down, and started beating him and at one stage shot him.
Azizul Hoque, officer-in-charge of Mohammadpur Police Station, said the reason behind the attack could not be known immediately.
Khaleda invites Hasina to Iftar

Khaleda Zia yesterday invited Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to an Iftar party on July 2, BNP sources said.
The BNP chief will host the Iftar at the capital's Bashundhara Convention Centre.
On behalf of Khaleda, Assistant Office Secretary of BNP Asadul Karim Shaheen gave the invitation card to Alauddin Ahmed, an official at the AL president's Dhanmondi office.
It has become a tradition that the two topmost leaders invite their political arch rivals to such programmes but none of them shows up at the event.
RMG workers demonstrate for arrears

Workers of Snow White Cotton Ltd at Savar on the outskirts of the capital yesterday demonstrated outside the factory demanding their arrears of the month of May.
The workers said the authorities, instead of paying the arrears that they earlier promised to clear yesterday, closed the factory.
Hundreds of workers marched from Akran to the UNO office to seek his intervention but the UNO was not at the office.
Khasru Ahmed, managing director of the factory, said they would pay the arrears soon after the problems among the share holders are solved.
Road crashes kill two

A salesman at Bonik Pharmacy was killed and two others were injured when a bus hit the rickshaw carrying them on Dhaka-Aricha highway at Mazidpur in Savar on the outskirts of the capital early yesterday, reports our Savar correspondent.
The deceased was Abdus Samad, 24. The injured were admitted to a local hospital.
Our Brahmanbaria correspondent reports, Nasir Uddin Sharif, sub-inspector of Ashsuganj Police Station, died when a bus of Royal Paribahan hit his motorbike on Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Ashuganj upazila yesterday.
Youth hacked to death in N'ganj

A youth was hacked to death yesterday at Gotaibonamapara in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj.
The deceased was Amal Hossain, 26.
Amal's brother, Kamal Hossain, took Tk 60,000, from a local, Mahbubur Rahman, to help him buy a piece of land and went into hiding, said Rupganj police.
Yesterday, Mahbubur's son, Sabuj, with some goons asked Amal to return the money. At one stage of altercation, they hacked Amal.
The body was sent to Narayanganj General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Drug peddler arrested in Gazipur

Police arrested a drug peddler with 10 Yaba pills in Sreepur bus station area of Gazipur yesterday afternoon.
On information, Sreepur police arrested Anowar Hosain, 35, of Sreepur municipality, while he was selling the contraband pills in the area.
Anwar was sent to jail.
