Arrest warrant against Amir Khasru, Harris Chowdhury, 10 others
A Dhaka court yesterday again issued arrest warrants against former commerce minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, former premier Khaleda Zia's political secretary Harris Chowdhury, Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan alias Shah Alam and 9 others in a case filed in connection with the sale of 18 government houses at lower prices.
Another Dhaka court issued arrest warrant against Akhter Hamid Paban, son of Khondaker Delwar Hossain who was appointed BNP Secretary General by Khaleda Zia, in connection with a carjacking case.
Trial of a sedition case against Awami Swechchhasebak League President AFM Bahauddin Nasim began yesterday.
GRAFT CASE
Judge Mohammad Azizul of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court passed the order as the accused have been absconding to avoid the arrest.
The same court on September 25 issued arrest warrants against them but they did not comply with its order for appearing before the court.
Names of Khasru, Harris and others were added in the charge sheet of the case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) against detained former housing and public works minister Mirza Abbas and 11 others on May 29 for causing a Tk 127.64 crore loss to the exchequer by selling 18 abandoned government houses at lower prices.
PABAN CASE
Metropolitan Magistrate SM Moin Uddin Ahmed cancelled Paban's bail and issued the warrant as he was absent from the court on four consecutive dates on sick grounds.
Paban and three others carjacked a Toyota Premio from its owner at gunpoint from the city's Motijheel area on October 13, 2005.
The Detective Branch of Police arrested Paban with the stolen vehicle from Bailey Road area on June 7 last year.
Sub-Inspector of Detective Branch of Police Syed Selim Masud, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, pressed charges against the four on December 28 last year.
Paban was earlier granted ad-interim bail from the High Court till submission of the police report.
NASIM CASE
Judge Aman Ullah of the Fourth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court recorded statement of Sub-Inspector Abdul Alim and set November 13 for next hearing of the case.
Police filed the case with a Dhaka court on March 11 in 2002 accusing Nasim of acting against the country's sovereignty and tarnishing its image abroad.
Assistant Superintendent of Police of CID's Faridpur zone Mohammad Dulal Uddin Akond arrested Nasim on February 27, 2002 from Zia International Airport and seized $6,300, three passports, two tickets, eight books and a number of Cds.
