BCL ransacks RU provost office
A group of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists at Rajshahi University ransacked the noticeboard of Shah Mukdum Hall provost, his nameplate and window glasses on Wednesday as he allegedly distributed seats among Shibir men.
Sources said the unruly BCL activists entered the hall and requested Provost Prof Nazrul Islam over phone to come to the hall and meet them.
As the provost did not arrive at the hall, some BCL activists started ransacking the hall provost notice board, provost name plate and window glasses. His office room was closed during the attack.
The activists alleged that they requested the provost earlier several times to remove Shibir activists who occupied seats of general students at different rooms of the hall, saying he did not take any initiative in this regard.
BCL leader Dalim said the provost is a pro-Jamaat teacher and he always patronised Shibir men in the hall. He did not hang the picture of prime minister in his room yet.
They also threatened to launch a tougher movement against the provost if he does not distribute seats according to merit.
Later, the provost and proctor visited the hall after the incident. A large number of policemen were deployed in front of the hall to avert any untoward incident.
When contacted, the provost refused the allegation brought against him by BCL activists, saying, “I informed the RU authorities of the incident.”
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Chhatra Union (BCU) yesterday called on the government to immediately ban Jamaat-Shibir politics, saying that they are spreading 'fanaticism' across the country using religion as a weapon.
They also urged the government and demanded immediate impose restriction in religion-based politics in educational institutions across the country.
BCU leaders said this at the two-day 26th anniversary of the union's RU unit in the central library area. Former Rucsu VP and language movement veteran advocate Abdus Razzak inaugurated the programme.
