Novels sold more than poetry books
Although more collections of poetry have been published at the Ekushey Boi Mela this year than novels, the sale of novels remains highest at the fair.
Publishers however point out that the collections of poetry published this year are quite impressive.
Bangla Academy sources said that the number of poetry collections tops the number of new books at the fair while novels and story collections rank second and third positions, followed by children's literature and essay collections.
A total of 2341 new titles have arrived at the fair so far. The books include 530 poetry collections, 432 novels, 273 story collections, 171 essays, 180 children's books, 86 rhyme collections, 79 autobiographies, 64 research publications, 62 books on the liberation war, 59 on science, 46 on expeditions, 37 on history, 34 translations, 31 on politics, 24 on humour, 24 on health, 24 on religion, 12 on drama and 145 in other categories.
Sources at different stalls said demand for poems by Mahadev Saha, Syed Shamsul Haque, Al Mahmud, Shamsur Rahman and Nirmalendu Gun remain the highest.
“Around 1200 copies of 'Okkhore Bona Shapno' by Mahadev Saha and a 1000 copies of 'Nirbachito 100 Kobita' by Syed Shamsul Haq were sold from my publishing house,” said Mazharul Islam, publisher of Anya Prokash.
Sales of ' Prempatra Pallabe' by Al Mahmud and 'Jonme Dio Bonge' by Nirmalendu Gunh also remain good.
Meanwhile a total of 74 new titles arrived at the fair yesterday including 'History of the Liberation War' and 'Danab' by Muhammad Jafar Iqbal, 'Eco-Tourism' by Dr Mohammad Abu Hena Mostafa Kamal, 'Ke Bache Ke Bachai' by Hasan Azizul Haque, 'Brikkha Katha' by Humayun Ahmed, 'Santanke Pitar Kathamala' by Abdul Awal Mintu and 'Juddho Biggyan' from Kaljoye Publication.
