Landless families protest grabbing of 'khas' lands
People, including women and children, of 50 landless families of Bahirgola area staged a demonstration in Sirajganj town yesterday protesting illegal occupation of 'khas' land by an influential quarter.
They took out a procession that marched different streets in the town at around 11.00am and later held a rally in front of Sirajganj Press Club.
The speakers at the rally said an influential quarter led by Jubo League activist Selim Ahmed in the name of lease occupied the 'khas' land of Bahirgola area near abandoned railway station in the town where around 50 families are living for the last 34 years.
The land grabbers evicted the families from the land. The helpless people are now passing days under the open sky in inhuman conditions.
The speakers urged the authorities concerned to take necessary initiatives to stop the illegal land grabbing and arrange shelter for the victims.
Bhumiheen Bastuhara Sangram Parishad Secretary Nabokumar, Borun Kumar, Asit Kumar and Mostafa Kamal, among spoke, at the rally.
Later, they submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner demanding action against the land grabbers.
