ACC clears AL leader Zafarullah's wife, sons of graft charges

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) yesterday submitted final reports clearing Awami League leader Kazi Zafarullah's wife and sons of corruption charges filed against them for amassing illegal wealth and concealing information in the wealth statement.
The investigation officer (IO) submitted a prayer for clearing wife Nilufar Zafarullah and sons Kazi Raihan Zafar and Kazi Omar Zafar of the charges.
ACC Deputy Assistant Director Abul Kashem, also the IO of the cases, submitted the probe reports to the CMM Court of Dhaka, saying that the cases were filed on 'factual errors'.
The first case filed with Ramna Police Station on November 20 last year said Nilufar had amassed wealth worth Tk 3,63,62,379 through illegal means. But the probe report said the charges against her were found to be false, he added.
The second case filed with the same police station on November 17 alleged that Raihan had amassed wealth worth Tk 88,87,500 through illegal means and concealed information in wealth statement worth Tk 44,00000.
But he submitted a wealth statement to ACC on July 22 last year and through his lawyer Golam Moula informed the commission that the wealth acquired by him was legal. So, the charges brought against him were found to be false, the IO said.
Again, the third case filed with the police station on November 18 alleged that Omar amassed wealth worth Tk 88,87,500 through illegal means and concealed information in the statement worth Tk 44,00000 to the commission.
But the IO mentioned that the case was filed on factual errors and the charges brought against Omar were found to be false and baseless. So, he prayed for discharging him from the charges, he added.
Meantime, the cases were transferred to the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court yesterday for next steps. After the receipt, the court fixed March 11 for hearing on acceptance of the final reports.
