Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed yesterday said the easy availability of Bangladesh Code and Laws of Bangladesh for the people and all concerned would help expedite the efforts to build a just and enlightened society.
“It's one of the basic responsibilities of the state, that means the government, to inform the people about the existing laws to ensure good governance and establish justice,” he said.
Fakhruddin was formally inaugurating the launching of a website of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry on Laws of Bangladesh and Bangladesh Code at Hotel Sonargaon in the city.
He also unveiled the cover of a CD on Laws of Bangladesh.
Fakhruddin said this step would be able to play a significant role in giving an overall idea of the latest laws of the country to the people of all walks of life, not only the persons involved in the legal profession.
In this regard, he drew attention of all concerned to compile all the rules and regulations and policy guidelines, and put those on the website as soon as possible.
The CA said inauguration of the website and putting all existing laws of the country into a CD would make the laws easily available.
All the existing laws and updated laws since 1836 till date have been posted on the newly launched website.
Earlier in November 12, 2007, Bangladesh Code containing a total of 956 all the updated existing laws of Bangladesh from 1836 to January 2007 was released in 38 volumes.
Law Adviser AF Hassan Ariff presided over the function, while Law Secretary Kazi Habibul Awal made the welcome address.
Advisers, judges, lawyers, government officials were present at the function.
Addressing the function, the chief adviser said compilation of laws is one of the major ways for the people to know the country's exiting laws comprehensively. “In fact, now anyone can know about any updated law of the Bangladesh Code by searching the website of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry.”
He said the free and easy availability of information makes transparency and accountability stronger in all spheres apart from making easier the path of democracy, good governance and the scope of getting justice.
“Keeping this view in mind,” Fakhruddin said, “His government has formulated and promulgated the Right to Information Ordinance 2008.”
Under some provisions of the Ordinance, he said, every citizen will have the right to get information from the all the authorities concerned and they (authorities concerned), as per request of the citizens, are bound to provide information.
As a result, he said, people's right to information will be ensured, transparency and accountability will be increased, corruption will be decreased and good governance will be established.
Hassan Ariff, in his speech, said posting of the Bangladesh Code and Laws of Bangladesh on the website would increase the practice of law in all sectors and raise the people's awareness
about law and thus ensure the rule of law.
Later, the chief adviser formally launched the website through a computer at the function.
