Drivers to lose points on licence for offence
From now on drivers of vehicles would lose points on their licence for offence on roads as part of a decision to cut traffic jam in the city following directive by the chief adviser, home ministry sources said.
The decision was taken on recommendations from experts to penalize drivers not vehicle owners, prosecuting them on their transport document as the existing rules.
The sources said if the drivers lose their points on their driving licence leading ultimately to cancellation of the permit to drive as is the practice in developed countries the result would be better in proper traffic management. The recommendation came from the experts.
Already, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) issued 219,000 high-security driving licences, replacing the plastic cards, which were issued earlier. Some 600,000 plastic cards were in the hands of drivers in the country, BRTA sources said.
The home ministry sources said action was going on to seize fake driving licences.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police was directed to take action against picking up passengers at random on streets instead of the designated places, illegal parking, occupying of road spaces by dumping construction materials and other objects.
