BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will start running party activities from her new office at Gulshan-2 in two to three days.
Work is going on for renovating house-6 on road-86 in Gulshan-2, which party insiders said the BNP chief herself selected as her office. They, however, have not yet made any announcement as to when she will start sitting there.
Meanwhile, former editor of JaiJaiDin Shafik Rehman, who is engaged with the process of finalising an office for the BNP chairperson, last night told The Daily Star that the former premier would pick one out of three buildings as her office by today.
He said the new office must have parking facilities and be free from traffic to ensure easy movement. "The office will be rented only for three months to conduct election campaign as Khaleda Zia will either go to the Prime Minister's Office or the residence for the leader of the opposition after the election," Rehman said.
Maruf Kamal Khan, former deputy secretary to Khaleda when she was the prime minister, said last night, "The renovation work of her new office is going on but we do not want to disclose the address right now to avoid crowd."
Earlier on September 27, talking to reporters at an iftar party at the Jatiya Press Club, Khaleda said she would formally resume party activities from her new office at Banani after the Eid.
Khaleda had selected Hawa Bhaban as her office before the 2001 election but later Hawa Bhaban turned into an "alternative power house" during the five-year rule of the BNP-led four-party alliance.
The controversial Hawa Bhaban has been closed since the arrest of her son Tarique Rahman on March 7 last year and also her own arrest on September 3 on corruption charges.
After her release on September 11, Khaleda selected the house of Shafik Rehman in Eskaton area for conducting regular party activities.
