DU authorities to urge govt to find out Prof Aftab's killers
The authorities of Dhaka University (DU) yesterday decided to send a letter to the home ministry with a request to find out the killers of a senior teacher of the university.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Syndicate with Vice- chancellor Prof SMA Faiz in the chair.
Sources said the authorities also decided to continue its discussions with the high-ups of the government for the release of the detained teachers and students.
Four teachers and at least five students of the university were arrested in last one month over the clashes on and around DU campus from August 20 to 22.
Prof Aftab Ahmad, a senior teacher of the political science department, died from bullet wounds in the Combined Military Hospital on September 26, 2006.
Three unidentified assailants shot him in the chest at point-blank range after storming into his third-floor residence on Fuller Road on that day.
His wife Noorjahan filed an attempt to murder case with Shahbagh Police Station on the following day accusing three unknown assailants.
A probe committee report on the security of DU teachers was also placed at the meeting.
The committee, headed by DU Pro-VC AFM Yusuf Haider, was formed after the killing of Prof Aftab.
The report recommended strengthening of the security of the campus, specially the residential area of the teachers.
“The recommendations include formation of campus police and employment of more security personnel,” Prof Haider told the reporters after the meeting.
Meanwhile, speakers at a discussion yesterday urged the caretaker government to take steps for proper investigation into the killing of Prof Aftab Ahmed and punishment to the persons responsible.
The discussion was held at National Press Club in the city to mark first death anniversary of Prof Aftab Ahmed.
