Hasina's trial deferred until Sept 8
A special court yesterday deferred to September 8 trial proceedings in the Tk 2.99 crore extortion case against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her cousin former health minister Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim.
Judge M Ashraf Hossain of the Special Court-5 also asked the defence to submit copies of the High Court (HC) ruling in the case, and writ petition filed by it.
Earlier on August 28, an HC bench issued a ruling upon the government, asking it to explain within two weeks why initiation and continuation of the case filed by businessman Azam J Chowdhury should not be declared illegal. The ruling followed a writ petition by Hasina's counsels.
The defence counsels yesterday submitted a petition to the special court seeking adjournment of the case proceedings until hearing of the HC ruling.
Advocates Syed Rezaur Rahman and Sahara Khatun were on the defence while Syed Shamim Ahsan Habib was on the prosecution side.
