BNP to contest if JS elections held first
The BNP will participate in the parliamentary elections if the government assures them of holding the elections before any other polls.
"BNP is an election-oriented party. We will of course take part in the national elections if they are held first," said BNP Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain at a discussion held at Mahanagar Natya Mancho at Gulistan in the capital.
The discussion was a part of the three-day programme being observed by the BNP to mark its 30th founding anniversary.
BNP (Bangladesh Nationalist Party) wants to take part in the government-sponsored dialogue once its chairperson is released, Delwar reiterated. He also demanded the release of Khaleda's elder son Tarique Rahman as early as possible.
"We are trying to get them [Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman] released through the legal process…"
Rebutting their archrival Awami League's criticism that their recent meeting with Khaleda in the sub jail was part of the deal that BNP had struck with the caretaker government through the backdoor, Delwar said since the founding of BNP, the party never compromised with any power.
Regarding the 1/11, the BNP secretary general said at the beginning the people were confused about it, but now they have realised that the 1/11 was an international conspiracy against the country, assisted by some local agents.
He accused the caretaker government of destroying the economy and the politics of the country under the pretence of war on corruption.
The government, without the people's mandate and legality, has failed running the country, Delwar said demanding the withdrawal of the state of emergency immediately.
Tanvir Ahmed Siddique presided over the discussion where RA Gani, standing committee member of BNP, MK Anwar and Sarwari Rahman, vice presidents of BNP, Prof Emajuddin Ahmed, former vice chancellor of Dhaka University, and Prof Sadrul Amin, president of Dhaka University Teachers Association, spoke among others.
