Indian politician's son convicted of murder
A court in India yesterday convicted the son and nephew of a leading politician of murder, a lawyer said, in one of the most watched cases in the country.
The two men were found guilty of murdering the boyfriend of Uttar Pradesh politician DP Yadav's daughter six years ago, defence lawyer GK Bharti said.
"The court has declared its verdict. We will appeal," he said.
Yadav's son Vikas, who was also found guilty of abduction, was said to be opposed to his sister's relationship.
He and Yadav's nephew Vishal will be sentenced on Friday and face life imprisonment or the death penalty.
The victim's family welcomed the judgement in the long-running case, which has generated immense media interest.
"It is a landmark judgement. It is a milestone," his mother Neelam Katara told reporters.
Vikas Yadav is already in jail after he was sentenced to four years imprisonment in 2006 for destroying evidence in the murder of a fashion model at a trendy New Delhi bar in 1999.
That case caught the attention of the Indian middle class, which was appalled when the accused were acquitted for lack of evidence -- even though the crime took place in front of scores of Delhi's glitterati.
Court cases in India take years and often decades to wrap up because of a huge backlog, and the rich and the influential are known to bribe key witnesses to change their testimony.
