700 tolas of gold looted from Eastern Plaza

Burglars looted about 700 tolas of gold ornaments from two shops in the capital's Eastern Plaza market yesterday, the fourth break-in in the market in the last 15 months.
Owners and employees of New Bobby Jewellers and adjacent Nipoon Jewellers, located on the third floor, rallied before the market demanding recovery of the looted gold and arrest of the accused.
New Bobby Jewellers lost over 600 tolas of gold jewellery while Nipoon Jewellers lost about 100 tolas, claimed the owners, adding that the burglers might have entered through the central air-conditioning ducts.
Selim Bhuiyan, owner of Nipoon Jewellers, said his shop had a two-layer security system. Secretary of Eastern Plaza Shop Owners Co-operative Society Ltd, Abul Kalam Azad, said they had strong security system both inside and outside the market, and the third floor was surrounded by a number of surveillance cameras.
Police suspect insiders to be involved in the theft.
On Tuesday night, burglars broke into Aziz Jewellers but could not steal much as the gold ornaments were locked in a vault. Another gold shop was looted in February last year and another three months earlier.
