Drug racket smashed
Authorities on Monday smashed the drug racket at Sawdagor Para in Kalihati upazila of the district.
A team comprising executive magistrate in Tangail Bhaskor Debnath, additional superindent of police (Gopalpur circle) Shajahan Miah, assistant engineer of Roads and Highways Department (RHD) in Tangail Abdul Hakim and Upazila Nirbahi Officer (Acting) in Kalihati Abu Naser Beg and policemen launched an eviction drive at noon.
Earlier on January 13, the upazila administration in Kalihati served notices on 76 people asking them to remove their houses from Sawdagor Para in 7 days as those were constructed illegally on the government khas land.
The administration on Monday evicted them as they failed to remove their houses by the deadline.
On January 11, a group of drug peddlers attacked three journalists of private television Channel '71. They are staff reporter Faisal Alam, Tangail district reporter SM Razzak and videographer Manzur Rashid Mamun. They were going to Sawdagor Para in Hamidpur area between the border of Kalihati and Ghatail upazilas for covering a report on illegal drug trade.
The gang hit them with sticks and sharp weapons indiscriminately, leaving them injured. They also took away the all valuables of the journalists including their camera, mobile telephone sets and cash money during the attack.
